Beauty and art are two profound and intricate concepts that have captivated philosophers and thinkers throughout history. Despite numerous efforts, no universally accepted and comprehensive definition has yet been formulated for either concept. Suhrawardi, a prominent philosopher of the Illuminationist tradition, although not addressing the notion of beauty directly, offers a deep and insightful perspective through his symbolic narratives and metaphysical ideas. In his philosophy, beauty is often equated with ḥusn, a term that encompasses both aesthetic and spiritual dimensions. Suhrawardi’s endeavor to manifest ḥusn in thought and expression becomes a means of guiding both the artist and the audience toward spiritual perfection. This article explores the relationship between beauty and artistic creation in Suhrawardi’s philosophy, with particular reference to the tale of Munis al-‘Ushshaq. Using a descriptive-analytical method, the study examines how Suhrawardi’s views on beauty can contribute to a deeper understanding of contemporary art and aesthetics, offering a unique synthesis of metaphysical insight and artistic expression within the framework of Illuminationist thought.
