Although garden design as one of the most apparent and tangible arts of China, has received worldwide attention, the philosophy behind it, however, is less concerned. Nevertheless, even for those scholars who study the Chinese garden purely from a historical and aesthetic point of view, there has been no doubt for the existence of a profound philosophy as its speculative basis, and nor even any doubt about its being Daoist. This paper tries to represent some features of Daoist thought as manifested in the Chinese garden. Since among the Chinese ways of thinking, Daoism possess an esoteric nature, the philosophy of the Chinese garden must be understood as an esoteric philosophy, a garden that recollecting the Daoist heavenly paradises and following the Daoist sapential principles, aims at celestialization of the qualitative space of terrestrial gardens.
